History of TexLER
The Texas Foreign Language Education Conference (TexFLEC) was housed at the University of Texas at Austin for fifteen years. In 2015, the conference was adopted for the first time by The University of Texas at San Antonio. For the 17th annual conference in 2016, we changed the name to the Texas Language Education Research Conference (TexLER) to reflect the interests of the students and faculty in the Bicultural-Bilingual Studies Department here at UTSA. The purpose of this annual conference is to bring together students, educators, and researchers to discuss prominent findings in the fields of linguistics and foreign/second language education.
Since its conception 19 years ago, TexFLEC has grown from a small, local conference to a large conference that has hosted many prominent speakers, including Ana Celia Zentella, Deborah Palmer, Margarita Machado-Casas, Bonny Norton, Elaine Horowitz, and Juliet Langman. In the beginning, researchers and educators mainly came from Texas, but in the past 6 years scholars from all over the United States and from countries as far as Kazakhstan, Nigeria, Thailand, and Japan have come to present their work and attend the conference. Educators come to present workshops that promote new and innovative pedagogical approaches to teaching language in the classroom, and they are able to receive continuing education credits for their attendance.
TexLER has found a dedicated home at the University of Texas at San Antonio, and we hope to promote and improve this conference in the coming years.
We looking forward to seeing you in this October!
Sincerely,
The TexLER Committee
