In honor of Dr. Miguel Alvarez's dedication to the research and education of culturally and linguistically diverse students, the TexLER Committee is proud to offer the Dr. Miguel Alvarez Research Award on a yearly basis to one graduate student whose TexLER presentation topic embodies Miguel's innovation and drive for equity for all students.

Who can apply?
  • Educators who have accomplished outstanding goals with marginalized students. 
  • Emerging scholars that come from marginalized backgrounds and have accomplished outstanding goals in their careers.
  • Recipient must be present at the TexLER conference and have been accepted to give a presentation.


Deadline to apply: October 1, 2025 at 11:59 pm CST

The Award will be presented at the Closing Ceremony of the annual TexLER Conference. Note: The recipient must be a registered attendee in order to receive the award. *The TexLER Committee reserves the right to award a recipient among all accepted presentations should there be no applicants during the current cycle. 

    The Dr. Miguel Alvarez Research Award application 

    Write a short essay answering the following questions. The length of the essay should be 500-700 words. Essays can be written either English, Spanish, or both. 

    ​Educators: How has your teaching performance contributed to improving the situation of marginalized students? What are the characteristics of your marginalized students?
    ​
    ​Emerging Scholars: What goals have you accomplished despite the disadvantages that you have experienced? What are those disadvantages or obstacles?

Dr. Miguel Álvarez, a doctoral graduate from the Department of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies at UTSA, dedicated his life to educational equity. His dissertation, entitled “The Role of Language in Students’ Reading Trajectory: Exploring a Summer Reading Enrichment Program,” is an example of action research designed to improve the quality of education for language minority students, especially in the area of literacy. Alvarez was hooded at a special ceremony in September 2015. Sadly, he passed away on November 25, 2015. He was buried with full military honors.
